The Deixis Press Weekly - Issue #27
Just a quickie, so I don’t let anyone down who might be hoping for an update.
Broad overview
The past week (and a bit) has involved:
Finalizing which prizes I plan to submit my books to, which can be a little more involved than you might imagine. Some prizes may require manuscripts to be sent in several months before the books are actually published (for example, the Booker 2021 prize was awarded in September; any books published in 2021 that were up for that prize had to be sent to the judges by April 2021). Some prizes, though, award the prize in the year after the book is published (so some of the books I’m publishing in 2022 would be in the running for 2023’s awards). Some have unclear deadlines. Some have no deadlines, instead taking running submissions. Some take books from this year, last year, and next year. Some never get back to you no matter how much you beg them for an entry form. Some have conflicting information on their website versus what they tell you in email. You can guess exactly how much I loooove this process.
Sorting out a competition for Some Rise By Sin, which hasn’t had too much takeup just yet, but which I intend to expand on next week.
Celebrating and promoting the audiobook of Some Rise By Sin, which is now ready to go right in your earholes.
Finishing Genevieve Jenner’s typesetting for Chocolate Cake for Imaginary Lives, a gorgeous magical-realist collection of food-inspired short stories (all with embedded working recipes)
Getting the first two of my next four books up on Goodreads and Amazon, which doesn’t take a lot of time, but which does require being organized enough to put my hands on a lot of information at once—which is fine. I’ve got it all here somewhere.
It’s been a lot! I’ve also been finishing up some reading for the wonderful James Kinsley (hi James, if you’re reading this) (the rest of you: buy his books), writing to some publishers I admire in an effort to get a little advice on bits and pieces, worrying about a holiday I have planned in Austria, and just generally feeling like I need a nap. And trying—and failing—to do a little bit of my own writing.
So that’s it, short and sweet. What have you been up to? You can reply to this email if there’s anything you’d like to tell me (it goes straight in my inbox).
Yours,
Angel
